3.1 Lesson Outcomes
After completing this lesson, learners will be able to:
- Evaluate safety hazards and risks within ECD environments.
- Use safety checklists appropriately to identify gaps and risks.
- Support the creation of safe and inclusive learning environments.
- Reinforce safety practices and routines with children.
- Identify developmental and diversity-related challenges affecting safety and participation.
- Apply workplace safety procedures appropriately.
- Support children’s protection and well-being within ECD settings.
- Reflect on workplace safety and protection practices.
3.2 Overview
This work experience lesson introduces learners to workplace processes involved in promoting safety and protection within Early Childhood Development settings.
Learners will gain supervised practical experience in evaluating safety risks, using safety checklists, supporting safe learning environments, reinforcing safety routines, and identifying developmental or diversity-related challenges that may affect children’s participation and protection. The lesson focuses on workplace safety practices that support child protection, accident prevention, inclusion, and safe participation within ECD environments.
In addition, learners will participate in safety inspections, protection activities, workplace observations, safety routine implementation, and reflective workplace practices that strengthen safe and inclusive learning environments.
This lesson prepares learners to confidently support safety and protection procedures while contributing to safe, secure, and inclusive ECD environments.
3.3 Lesson Content
WA0201: Evaluate Safety in Terms of Hazards and Risks
Practitioners should:
- identify hazards,
- evaluate risks,
- prevent accidents,
- and maintain safe learning environments.
Hazards may include:
- broken equipment,
- slippery floors,
- unsafe furniture,
- exposed electrical plugs,
- and dangerous materials.
Safety checklists help practitioners:
- identify gaps,
- improve safety procedures,
- and maintain workplace standards.
WA0202: Support Safe and Inclusive Learning Environments
Inclusive learning environments should:
- support participation for all children,
- accommodate barriers to learning,
- and maintain safety for different ages and developmental stages.
Practitioners should:
- organise safe play areas,
- provide supervision,
- and ensure learning materials are safe and accessible.
Inclusive environments may include:
- clear pathways,
- adapted equipment,
- visual supports,
- and accessible learning materials.
WA0203: Implement Safety Practices and Routines
Safety routines help children:
- develop awareness,
- follow safety procedures,
- and protect themselves and others.
Safety practices may include:
- handwashing,
- safe movement,
- emergency drills,
- playground safety,
- and safe use of materials.
Practitioners should:
- model safe behaviour,
- supervise activities,
- and reinforce safety routines regularly.
WA0204: Evaluate Developmental and Diversity Challenges
Some children may experience:
- developmental delays,
- communication difficulties,
- physical impairments,
- emotional challenges,
- or other barriers to participation.
Practitioners should:
- observe children carefully,
- support inclusive participation,
- and identify safety concerns related to developmental needs.
Support strategies may include:
- adapted activities,
- additional supervision,
- visual guidance,
- and collaboration with support structures.
3.4 Workplace Activities
SE0201: Safety and Protection Checklist
Learners should:
- complete safety inspections,
- identify hazards,
- and recommend safety improvements.
Checklists should:
- be dated,
- organised,
- and signed by supervisors.
SE0202: Relevant Safety Documentation
Learners should:
- maintain safety records,
- complete workplace documentation,
- and support safety procedures according to workplace policies.
SE0203: Workplace Logbook
Learners should:
- record workplace safety activities,
- document safety procedures,
- and maintain signed workplace logbooks.
SE0204: Self-Reflection and Action Plan
Learners should:
- reflect on safety practices,
- identify strengths and weaknesses,
- and develop improvement plans.
3.5 Workplace Scenarios and Practical Tasks
Scenario: Supporting Safety and Protection in an ECD Setting
