3.1 Lesson Outcomes
After completing this lesson, learners will be able to:
- Plan and prepare for developmental assessments appropriately.
- Observe and record children’s learning and behaviour accurately.
- Assess children’s participation, strengths, and developmental progress.
- Identify signs of distress, maltreatment, and barriers to learning where applicable.
- Prepare progress reports for parents using appropriate communication methods.
- Use assessment information to support planning according to individual needs.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical practice during observation and assessment.
- Reflect on assessment and observation practices within workplace settings.
3.2 Overview
This work experience lesson introduces learners to observing and assessing children’s behaviour, learning, participation, and developmental progress within Early Childhood Development workplace settings.
Learners will gain supervised practical experience in planning assessments, observing children from different broad phases, recording developmental information, identifying strengths and support needs, and preparing reports for parents. The lesson focuses on workplace observation and assessment processes that support inclusive development, responsive teaching, and child-centred learning practices.
In addition, learners will participate in workplace assessment activities, observation exercises, parent reporting tasks, developmental monitoring, and reflective practices that support effective observation and assessment within ECD environments.
This lesson prepares learners to confidently observe, assess, and support children’s learning and development while applying ethical and professional workplace assessment practices.
3.3 Lesson Content
WA0101: Plan and Prepare for Assessments
Assessment planning helps practitioners:
- organise observation activities,
- prepare assessment tools,
- and monitor developmental progress appropriately.
Assessment preparation may include:
- selecting observation methods,
- preparing templates,
- identifying developmental areas,
- and organising assessment schedules.
Practitioners should:
- assess children fairly,
- support inclusivity,
- and maintain confidentiality.
WA0102: Observe and Record Children’s Learning and Behaviour
Observation helps practitioners:
- understand children’s development,
- identify strengths and challenges,
- and support individual learning needs.
Observations may focus on:
- communication,
- social interaction,
- emotional responses,
- physical development,
- and learning participation.
Practitioners should:
- observe objectively,
- record factual information,
- and avoid assumptions.
Observing Different Broad Phases
Different broad phases require:
- age-appropriate assessment approaches,
- developmental understanding,
- and suitable observation methods.
Practitioners should observe:
- participation,
- behaviour,
- communication,
- movement,
- and developmental progress according to age and stage.
WA0103: Assess and Record Children’s Performance and Participation
Assessment helps practitioners:
- evaluate participation,
- identify developmental progress,
- and support planning.
Assessment records may include:
- checklists,
- observation notes,
- developmental reports,
- and participation records.
Assessments should:
- focus on strengths,
- support development,
- and identify support needs where necessary.
WA0104: Identify Signs of Distress, Maltreatment and Abuse
Practitioners should recognise:
- emotional distress,
- physical abuse,
- neglect,
- and behavioural warning signs.
Possible signs may include:
- fearfulness,
- unexplained injuries,
- withdrawal,
- aggressive behaviour,
- and poor hygiene.
Practitioners should:
- follow workplace procedures,
- report concerns appropriately,
- and maintain confidentiality.
WA0105: Monitor and Prepare a Report for Parents

WA0106: Use Assessment Information to Inform Practice and Planning
Assessment information helps practitioners:
- adapt activities,
- support children individually,
- and improve programme planning.
Assessment records may guide:
- support strategies,
- inclusion approaches,
- and developmental planning.
Practitioners should:
- reflect on observations,
- adjust teaching approaches,
- and support children’s individual needs.
3.4 Workplace Activities
