Overview

Africa is home to some of the world’s richest and most diverse wildlife populations. From large mammals roaming the savannas to birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects, every species contributes to the health and stability of ecosystems.

Wildlife conservation focuses on protecting these species and the habitats they depend on. Healthy wildlife populations support biodiversity, maintain ecological balance, contribute to scientific research, and create economic opportunities through responsible conservation and eco-tourism.

As an Eco-Ranger, understanding the value of wildlife is fundamental to protecting South Africa’s natural heritage and ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from healthy ecosystems.


1. What Is Wildlife?

Wildlife refers to animals that are not domesticated and plants that are not cultivated.

It includes organisms that live naturally within forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, mountains, deserts and marine environments.
