Practical Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Locate species using GIS technology.
  • Locate species habitats using GIS.
  • Locate natural resources using GIS.
  • Communicate environmental conditions accurately to specialists.
  • Operate a two-way radio communication system correctly.
  • Follow approved communication procedures during field operations.

Overview

Modern conservation operations rely on accurate location information and effective communication. GIS allows Eco-Rangers to collect and analyse geographical information, while two-way radios enable field teams to communicate quickly and safely during conservation activities.

During this practical module, learners will complete an integrated case study consisting of three practical tasks that simulate real conservation operations involving species tracking, habitat mapping and operational communication.

Before You Begin

Before commencing this practical module, ensure that you:

  • Understand the basic principles of GIS and GPS.
  • Are familiar with two-way radio communication procedures.
  • Know the organisational communication protocols.
  • Have received the required operational briefing.
  • Understand workplace safety procedures.

Equipment Required

Depending on the activity, equipment may include:

  • GIS software.
  • Computer or tablet.
  • GPS device.
  • Two-way radio.
  • Maps.
  • Data collection sheets.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Field notebook.
  • Communication accessories.

All equipment should be inspected before practical activities begin.

Safety Requirements

Learners must:

  • Follow organisational communication procedures.
  • Use equipment correctly.
  • Protect electronic equipment during fieldwork.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors.
  • Report equipment faults immediately.
  • Follow all workplace safety requirements.

Practical Case Study

GIS and Two-Way Radio Communication

You are a member of a biodiversity conservation team responsible for monitoring endangered species, mapping habitats and communicating operational information during conservation patrols.

Your responsibilities include:

  • locating species,
  • mapping habitats,
  • identifying natural resources,
  • communicating observations accurately,
  • supporting conservation operations using approved technology.

Practical Task 1: GIS Species Tracking

Scenario

Your conservation team is monitoring the movements of a critically endangered species within a protected area.

Practical Activity

Using the available GIS system:

  • enter observation data,
  • locate the species,
  • analyse movement information,
  • record the geographical locations accurately.

Demonstrate the ability to use GIS effectively during biodiversity monitoring activities.

Practical Task 2: Habitat Mapping

Scenario

Your team has been instructed to identify and map the preferred habitat of a particular bird species.

Practical Activity

Using GIS:

  • analyse environmental information,
  • identify suitable habitat,
  • produce habitat maps,
  • record observations accurately.

Demonstrate an understanding of how GIS supports habitat conservation.

Practical Task 3: Two-Way Radio Communication

Scenario

While on patrol, you discover evidence of illegal logging within a protected conservation area.

Practical Activity

Using the two-way radio:

  • communicate with the operations centre,
  • report the incident,
  • provide accurate location information,
  • follow approved communication procedures.

Communication should be clear, accurate and professional.

Facilitator Assessment Checklist

The facilitator should verify that the learner can:

GIS Species Tracking

☐ Use GIS correctly.

☐ Record species locations accurately.

☐ Interpret geographical information.

Habitat Mapping

☐ Analyse environmental information.

☐ Produce accurate habitat information.

☐ Record mapping results correctly.

Radio Communication

☐ Operate the two-way radio correctly.

☐ Communicate clearly.

☐ Follow approved communication procedures.

☐ Provide accurate location information.

Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)

The learner’s portfolio should include:

Task 1

  • GIS screenshots.
  • Species location maps.
  • Learner reflection.

Task 2

  • Habitat maps.
  • Environmental analysis.
  • Facilitator feedback.

Task 3

  • Radio communication records.
  • Incident report.
  • Learner self-assessment.
  • Mentor observations.
