Overview

Wildlife patrols provide an opportunity for Eco-Rangers to monitor biodiversity, observe wildlife, identify environmental threats and contribute to conservation management.

During this practical module, learners will complete a structured case study consisting of three practical tasks. These activities simulate routine patrol duties that Eco-Rangers perform within protected areas and conservation environments.

Learners will demonstrate their ability to:

  • Prepare appropriate patrol equipment.
  • Conduct an effective wildlife patrol.
  • Follow established wildlife patrol procedures during normal and unexpected situations.

Successful completion of this module demonstrates readiness to participate in wildlife patrol operations within a conservation environment. 

Before You Begin

Before commencing this practical module, ensure that you:

  • Have completed the relevant Knowledge Modules.
  • Understand organisational wildlife patrol procedures.
  • Are familiar with the operational area.
  • Have received the required safety briefing.
  • Understand your responsibilities during field operations.
  • Know how to report observations and incidents.

Always follow instructions provided by your facilitator or workplace mentor.

Equipment Required

The equipment used during wildlife patrols will depend on organisational requirements and operational needs.

Examples may include:

  • Appropriate field clothing.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Communication equipment.
  • Navigation equipment.
  • Patrol notebook.
  • Observation sheets.
  • Approved operational equipment.

All equipment should be inspected before beginning the patrol to ensure that it is suitable for use. 

Safety Requirements

Learners must:

  • Follow organisational safety procedures at all times.
  • Wear appropriate PPE where required.
  • Remain aware of wildlife and environmental hazards.
  • Operate only within their level of authority.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow mentor instructions throughout the practical activity.

Practical Case Study

Wildlife Patrol Training

You are assigned to conduct a wildlife patrol within a protected conservation area that supports a diverse wildlife population, including threatened and endangered species.

During the patrol you will demonstrate your ability to:

  • prepare patrol equipment,
  • conduct field patrols,
  • investigate environmental observations,
  • follow approved operational procedures,
  • respond appropriately to changing field situations.

The activities below simulate typical operational duties expected of an Eco-Ranger. 

Practical Task 1: Equipment Preparation

Scenario

You have been assigned to conduct a wildlife patrol in a game reserve that contains a diverse wildlife population, including endangered species.

Practical Activity

Prepare for the patrol by:

  • selecting the appropriate tools and equipment,
  • inspecting equipment for functionality,
  • ensuring equipment is suitable for the patrol,
  • preparing equipment according to organisational procedures.

The learner should demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and correct use of each item selected. 

Practical Task 2: Patrol Execution

Scenario

During your patrol you identify signs that may indicate illegal poaching activity near the reserve boundary.

Practical Activity

Conduct a systematic wildlife patrol by:

  • observing the operational area,
  • using appropriate patrol equipment,
  • investigating observations,
  • maintaining situational awareness,
  • following approved wildlife patrol procedures.

The learner should demonstrate safe, professional field conduct throughout the patrol.

Practical Task 3: Procedure Adherence

Scenario

While conducting your patrol you receive information regarding an injured wild animal located within a remote section of the reserve.

Practical Activity

Respond by:

  • following organisational wildlife emergency procedures,
  • selecting appropriate equipment,
  • locating the animal,
  • supporting the required response according to approved procedures.

Throughout the activity the learner should demonstrate professionalism, adaptability and compliance with organisational requirements.
