Overview

African wildlife is one of the continent’s greatest natural assets. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and arthropods each play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Every species has unique physical characteristics, behaviours and adaptations that enable it to survive within its environment.

Understanding wildlife behaviour allows Eco-Rangers to monitor animal populations more effectively, recognise signs of environmental change and support conservation activities while reducing unnecessary disturbance to wildlife.

Knowledge of wildlife characteristics also assists conservation personnel in identifying species, interpreting animal movements and making informed management decisions that contribute to biodiversity conservation.


1. African Wildlife

Africa supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife that occupies different ecosystems including forests, savannas, wetlands, rivers, mountains and coastal regions.

Major wildlife groups include:

  • Mammals

  • Amphibians
  • Fish
  • Arthropods

Each group performs important ecological functions that contribute to ecosystem stability.


1.1 Mammals

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates that produce milk to feed their young.

Examples include:
