Overview
An ecosystem is made up of living organisms and the non-living environment in which they live. Every ecosystem contains many different species that interact with one another while also depending on physical factors such as water, soil, sunlight and climate.
Although ecosystems may appear simple, they are highly complex systems where even small environmental changes can influence many different organisms. Understanding how ecosystems function helps Eco-Rangers recognise environmental change, monitor biodiversity and support conservation efforts.
1. What Is an Ecosystem?
An ecosystem consists of:
- Living organisms (biotic components).
- The non-living environment (abiotic components).
- The interactions between these components.
Every ecosystem functions because organisms continuously interact with each other and with their surrounding environment.
Examples of ecosystems include:
- Savannas
- Forests
- Wetlands
- Rivers
- Lakes
- Grasslands
- Coastal ecosystems
Each ecosystem has its own unique characteristics, species and environmental conditions.

2. Ecosystem Complexity
Ecological complexity refers to the many interactions that occur between organisms and their environment.
No organism exists in isolation.
Plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, water, soil, climate and sunlight all influence one another.
For example:
- Plants provide food for herbivores.
- Herbivores provide food for predators.
- Dead organisms are broken down by fungi and bacteria.
- Nutrients are returned to the soil.
- Plants use those nutrients to grow.
This continuous cycle allows ecosystems to function effectively.
Scientists often describe ecological complexity using concepts such as:
- Diversity
- Ecological integrity
- Ecosystem resilience
- Species interactions
The more balanced these interactions remain, the healthier the ecosystem becomes.
3. The Five Levels of Ecological Organisation
Ecologists study ecosystems at different levels depending on the type of information they require.
3.1 Organism
An organism is one individual living thing.

One elephant living in a game reserve.
At this level, ecologists may study:

- Adaptations
- Habitat requirements
- Feeding habits
3.2 Population
A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
Example
All elephants living within one reserve.
Population ecologists study:

- Population growth
- Birth rates
- Death rates
- Migration
Understanding populations helps determine whether species are increasing, declining or remaining stable.
3.3 Community
A community consists of all the populations of different species living in one area.
A community may include:
- Trees
- Grasses
- Birds
- Mammals
- Insects
- Reptiles
- Fungi
- Microorganisms
Community ecology focuses on how these populations interact.
Examples include:
- Competition.
- Predation.
- Cooperation.
- Mutualism.
3.4 Ecosystem
An ecosystem includes:
- The biological community.
- The physical environment.
Examples of abiotic components include:
- Water.
- Soil.
- Air.
- Sunlight.
- Climate.
Ecosystem ecologists investigate how these components work together to maintain ecological balance.
3.5 Biosphere
The biosphere is the largest ecological level.
It includes:
- Every ecosystem on Earth.
- All living organisms.
- Every environment capable of supporting life.
The biosphere connects all ecosystems through global environmental processes.

4. Ecosystems as Interconnected Systems
Every component within an ecosystem depends on many others.
For example:
- Plants require sunlight, water and nutrients.
- Herbivores depend on plants.
- Carnivores depend on herbivores.
- Decomposers recycle nutrients into the soil.
- Soil nutrients support future plant growth.
A change affecting one component often affects the entire ecosystem.

Suppose a river supplying water to a grassland begins to dry up.
Possible effects include:
- Reduced plant growth.
- Less food for herbivores.
- Declining herbivore populations.
