Lesson 1: 4IR Emerging Trends
Lesson Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
- Understand what the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is
- Identify key emerging technologies shaping 4IR
- Explain basic concepts like cloud computing and automation
- Recognise different types of programming and cybersecurity
Overview
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) represents a major shift in how technology integrates into everyday life and business. It is driven by advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, cloud computing, and data analytics.
These technologies are transforming industries, improving efficiency, and creating new opportunities — but also requiring new skills to stay relevant.
This lesson introduces the foundational technologies and concepts that define 4IR.
1. What is 4IR?
4IR refers to the current era where digital, physical, and biological systems are merging.
Key characteristics:
- Automation of tasks
- Real-time data processing
- Smart technologies (AI, IoT, robotics)
- Increased connectivity
Think of it as:
“Everything becoming smarter, faster, and more connected.”
2. Types of Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity protects systems, networks, and data from digital attacks.
The five main types are:
- Critical infrastructure security
- Application security
- Network security
- Cloud security
- Internet of Things (IoT) security
These are essential because as technology grows, so do security risks.
3. Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
RPA uses software bots to automate repetitive tasks.
Examples:
- Chatbots handling customer queries
- Automatically routing emails to departments
- Processing invoices or data entries
In simple terms:
RPA = software doing boring work so humans can focus on smarter work.
4. Software Programming
Software programming is the process of writing code that tells computers what to do.
It enables:
- Applications to run
- Systems to function
- Automation to happen
Without programming, none of the “smart” in smart technology exists.
5. Types of Programming
There are several types of programming languages, including:
- Procedural programming
- Functional programming
- Scripting languages
- Logic programming
- Object-oriented programming
Each type is used for different purposes depending on the problem being solved.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson, you learned:
- What 4IR is and why it matters
- The main types of cybersecurity
- How RPA automates business processes
- The role of programming in modern technology
- Different types of programming languages
These concepts form the foundation for understanding how technology is shaping the future of work and business.
