About Course

1.1 Course Synopsis

Solve Problems, Make Decisions and Implement Solutions is an NQF Level 4 course that develops practical skills for identifying workplace problems, analysing their causes, generating solutions, making informed decisions and implementing effective action.

The course is designed for junior managers and others responsible for managing teams, sections or areas of work.

1.2 About the Course

Workplace problems require more than quick fixes. This course introduces a structured approach to problem-solving and decision-making that helps you move from identifying a problem to implementing and evaluating a solution.

You will learn practical techniques for analysing problems, gathering information, generating alternatives, evaluating options, involving stakeholders and measuring results.

The course combines practical learning with workplace application, helping you apply what you learn to real problems in your area of responsibility.

1.3 Course Overview

The course follows a five-stage problem-solving process:

Module Focus
242817.1 – Define the problem Understand and clearly define the problem
242817.2 – Investigate the problem Gather and analyse relevant information
242817.3 – Generate problem solutions Develop and evaluate possible solutions
242817.4 – Implement solution(s) Select and implement the best solution
242817.5 – Evaluate the effectiveness of the solution Measure results and apply corrective action

The five modules follow the complete problem-solving cycle defined by the unit standard.

Course Content

KM1: Define the problem
Module 1 – Define the problem introduces the first and most important stage of the problem-solving process. Learners learn how to recognise a problem, distinguish it from a situation or cause, understand the relationship between problem-solving and decision-making, and define a problem clearly using verified information.

KM2: Investigate the Problem
In this module, you will learn how to investigate a problem by gathering and evaluating relevant information, consulting appropriate sources, identifying the different components of a problem, and exploring possible causes. You will use practical information-gathering and analysis techniques to develop a clearer understanding of the problem before moving on to solutions.

KM3: Generate Problem Solutions
In this module, you will learn how to generate alternative solutions to a problem using a range of problem-solving techniques. You will also learn how to establish criteria, weight those criteria, rank proposed solutions and evaluate their suitability.

KM4: Implement Solutions
In this module, you will learn how to select the optimum solution, consult stakeholders to obtain commitment, and implement the selected solution within organisational constraints.

KM5: Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Solution
In this module, you will learn how to measure whether an implemented solution achieves its intended purpose, evaluate its results against established criteria, and apply corrective action where necessary.
